Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering an effective way to improve athletic performance this summer. Kermit Walker, SWOCC’s famous Assistant Track Coach, will be teaching Plyometrics (PE-185) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:00 pm. Class starts June 22, 2015 and runs through August 13, 2015. Plyometrics, also known as “jump training” or “plyos”, are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing both speed and power. This training focuses on learning to move from a muscle extension to a contraction in a rapid or “explosive” manner, such as in specialized repeated jumping. Plyometrics are primarily used by athletes, especially martial artists and high jumpers to improve performance. This is a great opportunity for athletes to stay in shape over the summer and improve their verticals and agility. Athletes from all disciplines including volleyball, soccer, football, cross country and basketball will benefit from this course. Every year SWOCC helps athletes from several local programs improve their overall performance. The cost of the Plyometrics class is $140 for the one-credit version but it can be taken for no credit and no grade (audit) and then the cost for the complete summer term is just $97.50. The class will be held in lower Prosper Hall in the mat room on Southwestern’s Coos Campus, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
