A Douglas Co. Grand Jury concluded Friday, Jan. 9 in Roseburg that a Reedsport Police officer was justified in the shooting of a Roseburg man on Hwy. 101, Dec. 23. Fifty-five year old Robert J. Jenkins was suffering from schizophrenia when his vehicle broke down south of Reedsport. Passer-bys tried to assist him, but backed off when they saw what looked like a gun. When RPD Officer Ryan Fauver arrived on the scene, Jenkins pointed the gun at him. The police officer fired eight-shots. Jenkins later died from his injuries. Police were forced to close Hwy. 101 for several hours because of explosive devices found in the burning car. The gun turned out to be an airsoft .45-caliber automatic pistol.
