The Kiwanis Club of Coos Bay awarded twelve $2,000 scholarships to area students. The scholarship committee is made up of two Kiwanis club members, one Oregon Community Foundation representative and two members from the community at large. Scholarships went to Alisha Pace, Stephanie Gordon and Ashley Barbian from Marshfield High School, and Megan Huckabee, a 2013 graduate, was awarded her second scholarship from Coos Bay Kiwanis. Sasha Strain and Scylise Little were approved as MHS alternates. North Bend High School’s Chelsea Samora was awarded a scholarship, as were 2013 graduate Alaina Goodwin and 2011 graduate Samantha Bruno. Bandon’s Hope Richert and Emily Wampler, along with 2013 graduates Angeline Brown and Alexis Busso were each awarded $2,000 dollar scholarships. In Myrtle Point, 2013 graduate Crystina Roman was the recipient of a scholarship. Eligible candidates for the scholarships are graduating seniors or former graduates from a Coos County High School as well as GED and home schooled graduates. They must have applied to, been accepted by or attained eligibility to attend a two-year or four-year accredited educational institution, vocational/technical school, or graduate program. The $24,000 in scholarship awards was made possible because of the support the club receives from our communities at fund raisers including the Wave Young annual Salmon BBQ, the annual Bandon Crossings Golf Scramble, and the Blackberry Arts and Fun festivals. Generous contributions to the club’s Oregon Community Foundation managed fund and gifts from the F. Willis Smith fund also support the scholarship fund. In addition to scholarships, Coos Bay Kiwanis sponsor an annual shoe giveaway for kids in need, the Boys and Girls Club, Girl and Boy Scouts, Marshfield Key Club, and other events that benefit youth in our community. The club meets Wednesdays at noon at the Red Lion.
