Lemonade to Pop Tarts, Aug. 16

Sometimes it takes the goodwill of a young child to make one feel just a little better during this pandemic. Back in Ames, Iowa twins Katelyn & Elias Smidt, age 9, were running a lemonade stand when suddenly a passerby stopped her car, ran up to their stand, and stole their tip jar. The Ames Police Dept. rallied to the stand to help the children as did other First Responders and soon the street was filled with emergency vehicles and thirsty police, fire, ambulance, and others. The twins raised nearly $750, which they donated to the Police Officer Toy Fund. Several thousand miles to the west another nine-year old was making a gesture right here in the Bay Area. The “Pop Tart Princess”, Karly Mullanix, shared her birthday joy with the Bay Area’s homeless Friday, Aug. 13th by distributing 5,000 donated Pop Tarts to individuals at the Devereux Center in Empire. It’s the second year she has made the gesture.
