News release from ODOT, Sunday, Dec. 13, 7:15 a.m. ODOT: SW Oregon: Interstate 5 (Pacific Highway) Southwest Oregon: A checkerboard of travel restrictions and delays are on Tripcheck, including chain requirements on southwest Oregon mountain passes. Snow is falling in the Roseburg area and in the Rogue Valley. Drivers should expect winter driving conditions on all roadways in southwest Oregon. Currently, the passes north of Grants Pass between Hugo and Glendale (MP 66-80) and Canyon Mountain (MP 87-101) are under chain control for vehicles over 10,000 lbs. Siskiyou Summit is under a full chain requirement, except for 4 x 4s. Snow is falling on Oregon 42 Camas Mountain and U.S. 199 Hayes Hill. The Oregon 138E closure was extended west to MP 29 (12 miles east of Glide) due to a landslide. Highway closures for safety continue in the Diamond Lake area due to heavy snow and leaning and falling trees into the roadway. * Oregon 255 (Carpenterville Highway) near Brookings is closed on its south end, between MP 357-362 due to a washout and slide. Update at 12:40 p.m. – ODOT: SW Oregon: ODOT is fully staffed in the region and working to keep highways open as conditions permit. Drivers should prepare for winter driving, have chains and know how to install. Before travel consult the forecast which calls for continuing winter weather conditions and Tripcheck.com. As of 12:30 p.m. Sunday, highways conditions in southwest Oregon are as follows: * I-5 Canyon Mountain area, south of Canyonville – no current chain restrictions * I-5 Siskiyou’s, south of Ashland. Chains still required on all vehicles except 4×4. Expect delays from the chain requirement and various crashes and spin outs. ODOT/OSP is working the mountain. * Oregon 138E, 12 miles east of Glide; Oregon 230 and Oregon 62 from MP 57-65, all remain closed due to downed trees, powerlines and slides. * Oregon 255 (Carpenterville Highway) near Brookings is closed on its south end, between MP 357-362 due to a washout and slide. * U.S. 101 Douglas, Coos and Curry Counties: watch for high water in various locations. Update 4:15 p.m. Oregon 42S closed due to high water. Travelers can continue using Oregon 42 and U.S. 101 to travel from Bandon to Coquille. There is no ETA to reopen Oregon 42S. Update 4:30 p.m. ODOT: Valley, No. Coast: Both U.S. 101 at milepost 48 near Wheeler and OR 131 at Happy Camp Road near Netarts will remain closed through at least Monday. While crews continue to work at both locations, both areas remain unstable and unsafe due to the high quantities of rain last week and over the weekend. At the U.S. 101 location, a contractor working for ODOT continues to work on a large area that has sunk making the road unsafe since early last week. At the OR 131 location, crews continue to pump out a large quantity of water from a sink hole that developed from a failed culvert. Both Tillamook County sites will remain closed until repairs are made and it is safe for travelers. Travelers should avoid both areas. Update 6:50 p.m. ODOT: SW Oregon: Expect long delays on southbound I-5 near Glendale (MP 80) due to multiple vehicle crashes. Call 511 or use TripCheck.com for the latest chain requirements on I-5 mountain passes in southern Oregon. Conditions can change rapidly on each pass. Delay travel in this area if possible. Update 10:58 p.m. ODOT: SW Oregon: Interstate 5 (Pacific Highway) MP 0-11: The interstate is in a temporary closure due to severe winter conditions. ODOT is working to clear jackknifed trucks and other vehicles from on the roadway. Motorists asked to delay travel over Siskiyou summit tonight until conditions improve. Expect delays and congestion.
