Little Theatre on the Bay is in the middle of a multi-phase restoration campaign to restore the historic Liberty Theatre. In honor of Arbor Day, Lakeside resident Bill Perl recently sent a $1,000 donation to the theatre restoration project, along with an explanation about the surrounding tree plantings in downtown North Bend. The handwritten note by Perl read: “Donated in recognition of the four western red cedar trees that I planted on the highway triangle across the street from the Liberty Theatre during [Oregon] State Arbor Week in 1985 as a member of an adopt-a-block committee, formed to improve the appearance of Highway 101 between North Bend and Coos Bay.” Those trees, now tall and mature, provide a stately presence across the highway from the Liberty, and can be viewed from its newly installed 2nd floor windows. In a follow-up conversation with Restoration Committee Chair Jeanne Woods, Perl praised the City of North Bend for taking such excellent care of the trees and the median triangle for the last 33 years. “The trees are beautiful and now so is the theatre,” Perl said. “Keep up the good work!” To help with the restoration, individual and business sponsorships of windows are available, as well as seat plaques. To send donations or ask for more information, contact LTOB, P.O. Box 404, North Bend or email restoration@thelibertytheatre.org. Since 1959, the LTOB has operated and managed North Bend’s historic Liberty Theatre as a performing arts venue serving residents and visitors to Coos County. The restoration project is designed to ensure North Bend’s 94 year-old Liberty Theatre’s role as the architectural and cultural hub of the community is preserved and protected in time for the centennial celebration of the Liberty, scheduled for spring 2024. Little Theatre on the Bay is a 501(c)(3) non‐profit organization whose mission is “to cultivate the arts in Coos County.”
