Maritime Activities in Coos Bay, Aug. 26

On Wednesday August 26 a replica of the historic 1851 racing yacht will be visiting Coos Bay as a part of its West Coast tour. “Without exaggerating, America is the world’s most famous racing yacht. It is also one of the most beautiful yachts in the world. The reason is simple. The original America put yachting on the map. It is why the most famous trophy in sailing is called The America’s Cup.” Free Dockside tours of the yacht will be held from Noon to 2 PM. This would also be a wonderful day to enjoy the Farmer’s Market and visit Coos Art Museum and its 22nd Annual Maritime Art Exhibition. Make a nautical day of it in downtown Coos Bay. Coos Art Museum is currently featuring five wonderful art exhibitions. These include the 22nd Annual Maritime Art Exhibition; Featured Maritime Artist – Frank Gaffney; Beach “Seen” works by Ken Ayers, Don Jenson and Valerie Tucker; Communities Disaster and Change – Alaskan art inspired by the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, and Poet’s Eye – Photography by Janis Cedras Ayers. As always the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Gallery will be open for viewing. If you have not been by the Museum recently this is an excellent time to visit and see an outstanding selection of nationally recognized art. Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies an historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The Museum offers a wide range of arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10:00am to 4:00pm, Tuesday through Friday and 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 students, veterans and seniors, free to Museum members. Free to active duty military through the Blue Star Museum Program.
