Marshfield’s softball team is keeping pace with 4A Far West League leader Douglas following a doubleheader sweep, 2-1, 11-3, of visiting South Umpqua (3-3, 9-5) Thursday at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay. The Pirates got a one hit performance from sophomore pitcher McKenzie Johnson in game one, while Katie Maine batted in Khalani Hoyer in the bottom of the seventh to score the game winning RBI. Marshfield had nine hits. Douglas (6-0, 12-2) swept visiting Siuslaw (0-6, 2-14) in Winston, 10-0, 18-14 to hold a half-a-game leader on the Lady Pirates (5-0, 10-5). Marshfield has a make-up game with North Bend, Monday at 5 p.m., at North Bend. In the second game, the Lady Pirates scored three in the first and six in the third on eleven hits. Johnson again got the win, while senior Paige Tavernier picked up the save. North Bend swept two from visiting Brookings-Harbor (1-5, 8-9). The Bulldogs (2-3, 8-5) won the first game 7-6 and took the second 6-4.

North Bend holds on to first place in the 4A Far West League baseball race following a 15-7 win at Brookings-Harbor (1-4, 4-10) Thursday. Game two was postponed until Friday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs are 5-0, 10-3 overall. South Umpqua (3-3, 6-9) took a pair of one-run wins over visiting Marshfield (3-3, 6-10), 6-5, 7-6 in Tri City. Douglas (2-2, 4-12) was swept in Florence by Siuslaw (3-3, 5-11). The Vikings won the opener 3-2, and then took the second game 9-5.
