Marshfield’s boys’ basketball team won their fourth straight, six of last seven, but more importantly improved to 3-0 in the 4A Far West League with a wire-to-wire win over visiting Siuslaw Friday night in Coos Bay. The Pirates jumped out to a 10-5 lead after the first period and never looked back in a 57-41 win. Despite the win, Marshfield dropped three places in the OSAA power rankings to No. 25. Nine players got in the scoring book for the Pirates, led by Hunter Olson’s 16. Marshfield improves to 3-0 in the FWL and 7-6 overall. Siuslaw falls to 0-3, and 4-9. In other FWL games, Sutherlin (2-1, 8-3) won the first battle of the Bulldogs (1-1, 8-4) with a 53-50 decision over North Bend. Brookings-Harbor (2-1, 9-2) downed visiting Douglas (0-2, 1-9) 69-41, and La Pine won a non-league game at South Umpqua (1-1, 7-4) 78-42.

Marshfield handed visiting Siuslaw (1-2, 3-10) a 40-23 4A Far West League girls’ basketball loss Friday night in Coos Bay, earning the Lady Pirates (1-2, 9-5) their first league win of the 2013-14 season. In other FWL games, top-ranked Sutherlin (3-0, 11-0) won at North Bend (0-2, 2-8) 61-29, and Brookings-Harbor (2-1, 11-1) beat visiting Douglas (1-1, 5-5) 49-27. South Umpqua (1-1, 1-11) lost to visiting La Pine 37-24 in a non-league game.
