Upbeats 3rd at Thurston
Coach Debbie Brown. “The Marshfield Upbeats went up against some very tough competition Saturday at Thurston High School and danced (with a team of 12) following Stayton (a team of 30) and pulled out a 3rd place finish earning our highest score for the first competition of the season in ten years! Because of changes made by OSAA in classification and divisions, 4 State Champion teams from last year’s OSAA State Competition are now in the same division: Marshfield, Crook County (who has won 2 in a row), Valley Catholic (who has won 4 consecutive state titles) and Stayton (who has won 11 consecutive state titles). Out of the 8 teams in the 1A-4A division, the Upbeats won the execution caption with a score of 549; Valley Catholic won the effect caption with 521; Stayton won the content caption with 519. Final scores after two rounds of the competition: Stayton 87.11; Valley Catholic 86; Marshfield 82.83; Crook County 77.78; Pilomath 70.94. Bandon finished just behind Santiam with a 66.61. The 1A-4A division out scored all 5A teams at the competition which was won by Dallas with 75.94. It pre qualifies us for second round of the state competition! Our score is also the highest we have earned in preseason competition since the 2004 Championship! This was a strong start for us and we are hoping there is still enough time to make improvements and clean them up before state! Six of the Upbeats also won in drill down. Dancers drilled to the top ten in one of two divisions : first year varsity team member Ling Ling Zhu in novice; sophomores Jessica Kohl and Kaylee Krajcir, and seniors Sara Birrer, Paige Thomas, Katie Guetterman, in advanced! The Upbeats will be performing next at the 3A tournament this week and will be competing at South Albany on Saturday March 8.”
