Marshfield’s girls lost all four single matches at Grants Pass on Saturday in prep tennis. The Lady Pirates did win two of the four doubles matches (No. 2 & No. 3) but the Cave Girls prevailed overall 6-2.

Marshfield split a 4A Far West League doubleheader baseball game with Siuslaw Friday in Coos Bay. The sixth place Pirates (4-10, 5-15) won the opener 12-4, but lost the second game 9-8 to the second place Vikings (9-4, 11-6). In other FWL games: First place North Bend (11-1, 11-8) swept Sutherlin (2-12, 2-18) 10-5 & 8-6. Third place Douglas and fourth place Brookings-Harbor split a doubleheader. The Trojans (7-5, 8-10) won the first game 8-6, while the Bruins (7-6, 11-8) took the nightcap 12-10 in nine innings. Fifth place South Umpqua (5-7, 8-10) had the bye.

Marshfield swept a twin-bill 4A Far West League softball game from Siuslaw (4-9, 4-11) Friday in Florence, 17-7 (6) & 15-5 (5). The Lady Pirates (8-6, 11-10) are in fourth place, and hold an OSAA Power Ranking of 23. The top 24 teams advance to the state playoffs at the end of the regular season. In a battle for second place, Douglas and Brookings-Harbor split at Brookings. The host Bruins (9-4, 15-5) won the opener 4-3, but the Trojans (9-3, 12-4) won the nightcap 4-2 in nine-innings. First place South Umpqua (12-0, 14-5) dropped two non-league games at home in Tri City to visiting Glide, 4-2, 1-0. North Bend and Sutherlin split their DH. Sutherlin (1-13, 1-20) won the opener 13-6, but North Bend (2-10, 4-13) took the second 4-3 in eight innings.

North Bend’s boys took first and the Bulldog girls second at the 13-team Dick Baker Invitational Track Meet at Gladstone High School Saturday. Senior Wyatt Cunningham won the High Jump, 200, and ran a leg on the winning 4X100 Relay team. Marshfield’s girls were fifth and the Pirate boys ninth at the 65th Annual Grants Pass Rotary Invitation in Southern Oregon Saturday that attracted more than 25 teams. The Lady Pirates 4X100 Relay team (Isabel Groth, Adryana Chavez, Hailee Woolsey, Brittany Cook) placed second (50.43) to Grants Pass (49.86). In a matchup of two of the better Javelin throwers in the Far West League, Brookings-Harbor’s Ronnie Manley threw 180-00 for first place, while Marshfield’s Hunter Drops was second at 171-00. Manley also pitches for the Bruins baseball team. Drops a sophomore was also second in the Pole Vault at 14-09. La Pine’s Justin Petz won at 15-09. Marshfield’s Adryana Chavez won the Triple Jump (35-7.50). Marshfield hosts the 109th Annual Coos Co. Track Meet Friday, May 9.
