Marshfield finished fifth at the OSAA 4A State Volleyball Tournament at Forest Grove High School Saturday. The Lady Pirates won their opener over Sutherlin Friday 3-1 (25-17, 22-23, 25-23, 25-19), but then lost in the championship semi-finals that night to Sisters 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16). Then on Saturday in the 3rd/5th trophy match, Crook Co. won 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21). The Far West League champions end the season with a 22-3 record. Banks won the 4A crown 3-0 over Sisters.

Both North Bend and Marshfield advanced to the quarterfinal round of the OSAA 4A football playoffs with first round wins Friday night. The Bulldogs upended visiting Astoria 37-12 at Vic Adams Field to avenge one of the two losses the Bulldogs suffered during the regular season. Senior quarterback Brody Lucero threw for three scores. Marshfield went on the road and beat Tri-Valley Conference champion Molalla 13-7 in a defensive struggle. Senior running back Matt McAllister’s 54-yard run for a touchdown with 6:42 remaining in the fourth quarter was the difference. McAllister also scored the Pirates’ earlier TD that tied the game with 6:56 to go in the third. The extra point was tagged on by Ian Emlet, but he missed his second attempt. North Bend (7-2) will next host North Marion (5-5) and Marshfield (8-2) travels to Scappoose (8-1). Both games are tentatively set for Friday night, 7 p.m. North Marion upset No. 2 Sisters 21-14 to extend the Huskies season, and Scappoose beat Gladstone for the second time this season, this time by a 35-14 score. The other side of the 4A bracket has Cascade (9-1) at No. 1 Philomath (8-1) and Mazama (8-1) at Banks (8-1). North Marion (4), Philomath (1) and Cascade (2) are all out of the Oregon West Conference.

North Bend’s boys fell in the first round of the OSAA 4A state soccer playoffs 4-2 at Henley on Friday. The Bulldogs end the season with a 15-2 record. North Bend’s girls lost 1-0 to Brookings-Harbor. The Bulldogs finish with a 14-1-1 record.
