OSAA Speech
Marshfield tied Oregon Episcopal for second place in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Sweepstakes and North Bend finished fourth at the 2016 OSAA Speech State Championships at Western Oregon University in Monmouth Saturday, April 23. Oak Hill won with 30-points, followed by Marshfield and Oregon Episcopal with 28 each, North Bend tallied 26 and Bandon finished fifth with 21. Individually, Marshfield’s April Platt was first in the After Dinner Speaking competition. North Bend’s Grant Goodwin took first place in the Memorized Humorous Interpretation. He was also second in Memorized Serious Interpretation. Marshfield’s Mackenzie Stueve was third in Expository Speaking. More than 450 students, representing 64 schools participated in the competition.

First place North Bend swept a Far West League baseball doubleheader Friday at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend over visiting Douglas, 6-1, 6-2 Friday. South Umpqua at Siuslaw was postponed to Monday due to the weather.

First place Douglas handed visiting North Bend a 10-0 Far West League softball loss at Winston on Friday. The second game will be played Monday, 5 p.m. Siuslaw at South Umpqua will also take place at 5 p.m. The Lancers won the first game at Tri City 9-0.

Marshfield’s boys and girls track & field teams swept the Central Coast Invitational meet at Siuslaw High School in Florence Friday. The Pirate boys tallied 174 points to North Bend’s 157, Dallas 118, Siuslaw 64, Roseburg 43.5, Oakland 43, Toledo 29 and Sutherlin 23.5. The Lady Pirates won with 173.5 points, Siuslaw was second with 144, Dallas 91, North Bend 88, Oakland 42, Gold Beach 37, Sutherlin 35, Toledo 23.5, Roseburg 19 and Elkton 2. North Bend’s Luke Lucero won both sprint races 100 (11.52) & 200 (23.94). The Bulldogs Michael Brown won both the 1500 (4:08.93) & 3000 (9:07.94). NB senior Drae Stark took both Hurdle races 110HH (15.32) & 300 IH (42.10). He also won the Triple Jump (42-10.75). Marshfield’s Hunter Drops won the Pole Vault (15-06) & the Javelin (179-03). The Pirates also won the 4X400 Relay (Rylee Trendell, Devin Benson, Isaac Smith & Zach Kellar) 3:31.94, and Smith took the High Jump (6-04). On the girl’s side, Marshfield’s Isabel Groth won three events. The senior took the Long Jump (16-08.25), and both Hurdle races 100H (15.86) & 300H (47.35). She also ran a leg on the winning 4X100 Relay ream (Khaley Aguilar, Hannah Beaulieu, Groth, Ravyn Miranda) 51.41. Aguilar won the Pole Vault in a personal best and meet record 11-04. Pirate freshman Jazmin Chavez won both the 1500 (5:03.26) & 3000 (11:05.52). Also winning for Marshfield was Miranda in the 100 (13.15), and McKenzie Allison in the Javelin (127-04). Allison also competed Saturday at the 52nd Annual Centennial Invitational and placed fourth in the Javelin Throw (126-11). Both North Bend and Marshfield compete in a Far West League JV meet at North Bend Tuesday.
