Marshfield’s girls were second and the Pirate boys fourth at the three-day Evergreen Federal Winter Classic basketball tournament Wednesday through Friday at Hidden Valley and North Valley high schools in the Grants Pass area of Southern Oregon. The Lady Pirates fell to unbeaten Crater 38-36 in the finals, after beating Sutherlin 51-43 to open the tourney, and then upsetting the host school, Hidden Valley 47-38 to gain the championship game against the 5A Comets of Central Point. Marshfield’s boys fell 47-35 to Sutherlin to open the tourney, but bounced back with a 55-28 win over Lost River and then beat Scappoose 50-48 to claim fourth place. Both the boys (5-7) and girls (8-4) play in the Far West League & Skyline Conference Crossover Tournament Friday & Saturday at Douglas & North Valley high schools.

North Bend swept visiting Elmira in a coed basketball doubleheader Friday at North Bend. The Bulldog boys won 65-45, while the girls beat the Falcons 49-29. Both the boys (7-4) and girls (6-5) play at Sutherlin, Tuesday, Jan. 3.
