Marshfield’s boys won their first game of the 2016-17 prep basketball season Friday night over Elmira on the same night the Lady Pirates streaked to their fourth straight victory in a coed doubleheader inside the Pirate Palace at MHS in Coos Bay.  The girls led from start to finish in a 51-27 win over visiting Elmira in the opener, while the boys won 52-31 with nine players scoring led by senior Nick Minton’s 13.  The Marshfield boys host Harrisburg Monday night, 7 p.m., while the Lady Pirates are off until the Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament Thursday through Saturday at MHS.

North Bend’s boys (2-1) lost their first game of the 2016-17 prep basketball season Friday night at Newport 60-50.  The Lady Bulldogs (2-1) beat the Cubs, 59-41   Phoenix plays at North Bend on Tuesday.  The girl’s varsity game is set for 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

With five individual champions, Roseburg won the 38-team Coast Classic wrestling classic at North Bend High School Saturday night.  The Indians had five individual champions en route to 298.5 team points.  Crook Co. was second with 224.5, followed by Crater 190.5 and Marshfield 159.  The Pirates had one champion in junior Travis Wittlake, Jr., who won the 170-pound title and was named the two-day events “Upper Weights Outstanding Wrestler.”  Also making the finals, but finishing second for Marshfield were (126) Joseph Paramo, and (138) AJ Lira.  Also placing for the Pirates were Cade Hite (160) third, Garret Lefebvre (145) fourth, Frankie Harlow (113) fifth, and Will Jantzer (152) sixth.  Coltyn Ringen led North Bend with a fifth place finish at 126.

North Bend’s boys and girls teams swept their own 25th annual North Bend Swim Invitational Friday and Saturday at the North Bend Municipal Pool. North Bend’s girls tallied 397 points for first place, while Marshfield girls were second.  The Bulldog boys beat Roseburg 321 to 290, while Marshfield came in third.  On Friday, Marshfield’s swim teams swept a coed four-way meet at the Mingus Park Pool, in Coos Bay.   Girls: MHS: 430, GPHS: 371, Crater: 157, Ashland: 171; Boys: MHS:440, GPHS: 418, Crater: 37, Ashland: 23.
