Bay City Duals
Eight teams will participate in Marshfield’s Bay Area Duals wrestling tournament in Coos Bay today. Most of the teams are from the 4A Far West League.

Marshfield’s boys won their own Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament Saturday night in Coos Bay. Led by tourney MVP Jake Miles, the Pirates beat defending 4A state champion Scappoose 48-36. The Indians won their state title earlier this year in Hillsboro over North Marion. Marshfield hosts North Marion Tuesday, girls 3 p.m., boys at 5 p.m. In the title game of the three-day tourney in the Pirate Palace, Miles had 17 points, 15 in the first half where the Pirates built a 23-17 lead by the break. Marshfield outscored Scappoose 17-9 in the third to go up by 14 entering the fourth. Rylee Trendell had 11, followed by eight-a-piece from Justin Cooper and Scott Clough. Kasey Banks and Bo James Weatherston rounded out the scoring with two each. Cooper was named First Team All Tourney, and Trendell made the second team. Miles also won the 3-Point Shooting Contest for the tourney.

Marshfield’s girls finished second to two-time defending state 4A champion Sutherlin at the Lady Pirates own 2015 Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday basketball tournament at MHS in Coos Bay Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won 44-25. Marshfield was led by freshman Tess Garrett’s seven-points. Hope Lott and Mallory Heyer each scored six, Marissa Erickson three, Grace Brugnoli two and Carli Clarkson one. Marshfield’s Tess Garrett and Hope Lott were named to the All Tourney First Team, and Alex Locati was named to the Second Team. The Lady Pirates host North Marion Tuesday, 3 p.m.

North Bend’s girls placed fourth at the 13th Annual Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs beat North Valley 48-27 to clinch the Consolation Crown. North Bend lost its opener to Sutherlin, which won the tourney, on Thursday, 42-32, but the Bulldogs bounced back on Friday by beating Junction City Friday 65-48 to set up the finale with the Knights. North Bend’s Cheyenne Datan won the tourney’s 3-Point Shooting Contest, and Vanessa Gajdosova was named to the All Tourney Team.

North Bend’s boys open the Capital City Classic basketball tournament at Willamette University in Salem this morning, 10 a.m., against Gervais. The tourney runs through Wednesday.

North Bend’s girls won the eight-team Newport Swim Invitational Friday on the Central Oregon Coast. The Bulldogs tallied 386 points to Tillamook’s 256. Cassie Dallas and Vianka Hoyer each won two events. North Bend’s boys were second to Newport, 329 to 308. Karl Stuntzner-Gibson and Jerrad Perez-Duncan each won two events.

Marshfield’s wrestling team won the 36-team Grants Pass Winter Kickoff Tournament Saturday in Southern Oregon. The Pirates had six wrestlers in the finals and came away with five champions. The Pirates won with 242 points, followed by Henley 202.5, Grants Pass 184 and Crater 179. 113 – Cole Smith (8-3) placed 2nd; 120 – Chase Dibala (13-2) placed 5th; 120 – Ryder McKee (13-2) placed 1st; 126 – AJ Lira (13-2) placed 1st; 132 – William Jantzer (10-6) placed 5th; 138 – Cade Hite (6-2) placed 1st; 145 – Will Forbes (6-4); 152 – Justin Gerhardt (3-6); 160 – Travis Wittlake (12-1) placed 1st; 170 – Gary Jantzer (13-0) placed 1st; 195 – Joey Vigue (12-4) placed 3rd; 220 – Angel Perez (0-2); 285 – Mason Jussilla (4-3).
