North Bend’s softball team improved to 2-0 with a 16-1 win over visiting Myrtle Point at the Oak Street Park Field in North Bend Thursday. The Bulldogs beat Cottage Grove 22-1 to open the 2016 prep season. North Bend next plays at Cascade in Turner on March 24.

Marshfield’s softball team opened the 2016 prep season with a 6-2 win over visiting Newport (0-2) Thursday afternoon at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay. The Lady Pirates (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first led by an RBI double by junior Katie Maine that scored seniors Carli Clarkson and Khalani Hoyer . Marshfield added two more in the third on a two-run homer by Hoyer over the centerfield fence. The Pirates added one more in the fourth with Clarkson scoring from third. Newport got two back in the top of the seventh, but junior McKenzie Johnson’s personal best 17 strike-outs shutdown the Cubs. Marshfield is at a tournament in Medford, Monday playing Sweet Home at 1 p.m., and Klamath Union at 3 p.m.

Marshfield’s track & field teams swept the boys and girls competition at their own Icebreaker Meet Thursday on Prefontaine Track in Coos Bay. Nine school and over 800 entries unfolded under sunny warm skies in Pete Susick Stadium. Marshfield boys won with 183-points, to Hidden Valley’s 133, Junction City 109, North Valley 103, Sutherlin 41, Glide 30, Camas Valley 24 and Powers 12. The Lady Pirates won with 174-points, followed by North Valley 103, Glide 73, Hidden Valley 67, Junction City 38, Sutherlin 32, Camas Valley 27 Powers 17 and Umpqua Valley Christian 15. Freshmen led Marshfield, Tess Garrett won the 800 (2:29.72), Jazmin Chavez won the 1500 (5:21.90) and the 3000 (12:12.80), Khaley Aguilar took the Pole Vault (9-06). Senior Isabel Groth won the 100H (16.47) and Long Jump (16-08), senior McKenzie Allison won the Javelin (122-07). For the boys: senior Sawyer Heckard won the 1500 (4:20.09), 3000 (9:57.17), 4X400R (Heckard, Isaac Smith, Tristin Lemmons, Zach Kellar) 3:39.74, Joey Vigue Shot Put (44-01), Hunter Drops Javelin (180-06), and Pole Vault (14-06), Isaac Smith High Jump (6-02). The Pirates next compete at the Marist Track Classic in Eugene, April 2.

North Bend’s boys and girls track & field teams opened the 2016 prep season at the Siuslaw Icebreaker Meet at Florence Thursday. No team scores were kept. The Bulldogs senior Drae Stark won four events, while senior Brianna Cole took two. NBHS boys winners: Drae Stark 100 (11.98), 110HH (16.21), 300H (42.61), Triple Jump (42-00), Brody Lucero Javelin (172-10), Luke Lucero Pole Vault (13-00). NBHS girls: Brianna Cole 100 (14.29) & Triple Jump (32-07), Megan Rutherford 3000 (12:31), Maggie Muenchrath 100H (17.65), and Kalista Ross Pole Vault (9-00). North Bend hosts its own Bulldog Invite on April 2.
