Marshfield’s golfers will open the OSAA 4A State Championships at Trysting Tree Golf Club, Monday, near Corvallis.  The Pirates have been paired with Baker/Powder Valley, Stayton and Valley Catholic in the first round with tee times between 12:15 and 12:51 p.m.    The tournament runs through Tuesday.

Marshfield won both the boys’ and girls’ Far West League District Track & Field Championships Saturday on Frank Shriver Track at North Bend High School.  The Pirate boys won by five-points over Bay Area Rival North Bend 225.5 to 220.5.  Siuslaw was a distant third with 94, followed by Brookings-Harbor 53, Douglas 37 and South Umpqua 11.  The Lady Pirates won with 211 points, North Bend was second with 149, Siuslaw followed in third with 137, followed by Brookings-Harbor 64.5, South Umpqua 58.5 and Douglas 19.  Marshfield junior Zach Kellar was named the Male Outstanding Runner by winning the 100 (11.39), 200 (23.56), and 400 (51.12) and ran a leg on the winning 4X400R team (3:31.75) along with Trevor Johnson, Tristin Lemmons and Devin Benson.  The Outstanding Female Runner of the meet was Siuslaw senior Celie Mans who won both the 3000 (11:08.64) and 1500 (5:04.87).  The Outstanding Male Thrower was Siuslaw junior Trent Reavis who won the Shot Put (52-00.50), Discus (150-11) and took second in the Javelin (172-06).  The Female Outstanding Thrower was Siuslaw senior Carissa Oliver who won the Shot Put (41-05) and Discus (136-05).  The Outstanding Male Jumper was Marshfield senior Trevor Johnson who won the Long Jump (20-05) and Triple Jump (41-11.50).  The Outstanding Female Jumper was Marshfield sophomore Elise Martin who won the Triple Jump (33-09.75) and was fourth in the Long Jump (15-00.50).  The top two in each event qualified for the OSAA State Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene.  Both Marshfield and North Bend qualified nine male athletes; however, the Pirates cover 12 events and the Bulldogs 11.  For the girls, Marshfield qualified 11 in 14 events, and North Bend qualified six in six events.  Marshfield coach Rich “Mac” McIntosh was named Coach of the Year.

Marshfield’s climb to third place in the Far West League with a doubleheader sweep at Douglas to end the regular season propelled the Lady Pirates into a home “Play-In” game in the upcoming OSAA playoffs.  Marshfield (15-9) will host Hidden Valley (11-10) on Thursday, May 18, 5 p.m. at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay.  North Bend (17-7), the second place team in the FWL, has a home game with Astoria (11-13) also Thursday, 4 p.m., at the Oak Street Park Field.  Douglas (9-13), the FWL’s fourth place team travels to Newport (14-8), and FWL champion South Umpqua (21-2) has a bye.

North Bend earned a bye from the upcoming OSAA “Play In” round for baseball by winning the Far West League title.  The Bulldogs (14-8) will have a home game in the First Round.  The FWL second place team Douglas (13-11) will host Valley Catholic (14-6) from Beaverton, while third place South Umpqua (11-13) travels to Sweet Home (16-5) on Thursday, May 18.
