Wittlake takes Bronze
Marshfield High School’s Travis Wittlake finished with the Bronze Medal at the UWW Cadet World Wrestling Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia over the weekend. The Pirate Junior, wrestling at 76kgs, took a tough loss to a Russian in the second round, but then won three in a row to secure the medal and third in the world.

Marshfield and North Bend will both open the 2016 4A Far West League football season unbeaten next week after sweeping preseason opponents. The Pirates beat visiting Junction City 35-20 Friday night in Pete Susick Stadium at Coos Bay. The Bulldogs handed defending state champion Cascade its second loss of the season with a 49-7 win at Vic Adams Field. The two Bay Area teams open FWL action next Friday with defending league champion North Bend (2-0) at Brookings-Harbor (1-2), Marshfield (3-0) at So. Umpqua (0-2) and Siuslaw (0-2) at Douglas (2-1).
Prefontaine Run
Grants Pass swept the team titles during the high school 5k portion of the 37th Annual Prefontaine Run in Coos Bay Saturday. Former Marshfield grad Jared Bassett won the open 10K race (31:43), while Pacific High School cross country coach Cora Wahl was the top female finisher (42:32). More than 1,100 runners took in the annual event. In the high school race, Marshfield’s boys placed third out of 14 teams, while North Bend was sixth. North Bend was fourth in the girl’s race, with Marshfield fifth. Kellen O’Neill of Arcata, CA won the boy’s race (15:54.7) and Emma Bennion, of St. Mary’s in Medford, won the girl’s race (19:43.9).
