Defending champion Marshfield, North Bend and Siuslaw all won their Far West League volleyball openers Tuesday night. The Lady Pirates did it on the road, while the Bulldogs and Vikings came up with home wins. Marshfield prevailed 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-23) over the Bruins, while North Bend did the same to visiting Douglas 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-17), but Siuslaw needed five sets in Florence to dispose of So. Umpqua 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-3). The second round is Thursday with (1-0) Siuslaw at Marshfield (1-0), So. Umpqua (0-1) at North Bend (1-0), and Brookings-Harbor (0-1) visits Douglas (0-1) in Winston.

North Bend (2-1-1) lost 1-0 at Philomath in boys’ soccer play Tuesday. The Bulldog girls (2-0-1) beat the visiting Warriors 2-1 at home. Marshfield’s girls (0-4) lost 1-0 at home to Cottage Grove. The Pirates boys (1-2) fell 7-1 at Cottage Grove. Far West League boys’ soccer begins Thursday with Marshfield at Brookings-Harbor and Douglas at North Bend. The girl’s schedule has Douglas at North Bend and Marshfield at Brookings-Harbor.
