National Weather Service Alert, Oct. 13

A big change in the weather will occur later this week into this weekend as two storms impact the region. The first storm is expected Wednesday night into Friday while the second storm is forecast for Saturday and Sunday. The primary impacts will be water and wind. Periods of heavy precipitation may lead to urban roadway ponding and localized flooding. Gusty winds may bring down weakened trees with full foliage or their branches causing localized power outages. The rainfall amounts forecast through Sunday night are near or above the entire monthly October normals! Impacts: • Downed trees more likely due to foliage, leading to power outages. • Ponding of roads and flooded culverts and drains where clogged by debris. • Snow accumulation at times only at the highest elevations in places like Crater Lake rim and the top of Mt. Ashland. • Wet and slick roads. • Possible flash flooding on recent wildfire burn scars. Forecast Confidence: • Medium to high for rainfall amounts. • Medium for snow at the highest elevations. • Medium for gusty winds, except high for the coast. • Medium on the timing of each storm. Timing and Strength: • Rain: The heaviest rain will fall at the coast, in the Coastal Mountains, across western Siskiyou County, the Mt. Shasta Region, and the Cascades. Rain amounts will be less east of the Cascades, but still unusually high for October. • Snow: • Snow accumulation will occur above the passes. Snow levels will range between 7000 and 9000 feet. Snow levels could briefly lower to 6000 feet at times. • Wind: Increasing winds Thursday with the strongest winds at the coast, Coastal Mountains, Shasta Valley, and east of the Cascades. Gusty winds are likely again in the same areas on Saturday. The remnants of Typhoon Songda will be carried into our region.
