City of North Bend Release – Fire Chief Jim Brown and Finance Director Jessica Terra presented to the North Bend City Council at its Monday work session explaining why it made financial sense for the City to borrow from itself to purchase a new fire engine. The move is expected to save taxpayers approximately $139,000 over traditional financing methods and increase inflationary costs by deferring the purchase. Additional savings over the engine’s life are expected to be realized by using two rapid attack vehicles to respond to most fire calls. For instance, about two-thirds of all fire dispatch calls are medical emergencies that do not require the response of a large fire engine. The City Council will mull over the presentation throughout the holidays and will decide on the purchase at its meeting in January 2022. The new fire engine would replace the 2001 Spartan engine now in reserve status at Station No. 2. The department would then move its 2003 KME engine into reserve status and place it at Station No. 2.
