NB Municipal Pool, April 20

City of North Bend release – A bit of history bit the dust Tuesday in North Bend as crews began dismantling the pump system, filter system, and boiler at the municipal pool as part of Phase I capital infrastructure upgrades to get the facility operational by October 2022. West Coast Contractors was awarded the contract to remove and replace the 1984 boiler and 1956 pump and filtration system. The pump and filtration system are original to the 25-meter by 25-year u-shaped pool, which opened in November 1957. Costs for the Phase I repairs are $781,819 and are being offset by a $375,000 grant from the Judith Ann Mogan Foundation. In 1955, the North Bend City Council struck a deal with the North Bend School Board to build and equip the pool on the North Bend High School campus, providing the school district would accept responsibility for operation and maintenance. The pool cost $360,000 to construct and $35,000 to operate. In 1994, the school district later handed the pool back to the city when expenses exceeded the available budget to operate and maintain the facility. Last year, North Bend taxpayers agreed to a five-year levy to cover the cost of maintenance and operations. In return, the City Council agreed to find money to fund the capital needs of the pool, now totaling more than $1 Million. Proceeds from the levy shall remain in a restricted account and will operate the pool for five years when the facility re-opens. In the coming months, the staff will present proposed new rates for non-city residents’ pool use. Thank you, North Bend, for your continued patience and understanding.
