Both North Bend and Marshfield won their prep football openers on long road trips Friday night. The Bulldogs traveled to the North Coast and bettered Astoria 31-21. North Bend led 24-0 at the half, and was up 31-7 before the Fishermen rallied back. The Bulldogs have next week off and will host Cascade Sept. 16. Marshfield surprised the defending state 4A champs Cascade at Turner with a 35-29 win. The Pirates were down by two scores before rallying and stealing the win on the last play of the game when quarterback Nick Minton threw a corner fade pass to Zach Kellar who grabbed the ball and sealed the win for the visitors with no time remaining on the clock. Marshfield travels to Phoenix this coming Friday night. In a JV game that preceded the varsity contest, the young Pirates beat Cascade 38-28 after trailing 14-0 early.

Marshfield’s cross country team opened the 2016 prep season Saturday at The Invitational, Fern Ridge Reservoir, northwest of Eugene. The Pirates ran in the 5K Frosh/Soph division. The boys placed fourth out of eight team, and the girls were third out of four teams. Individually for the Pirates: Jeremy Roe placed tenth (18:25.1); Gabe Delagao 16th, (19:06.5); Jonathan Sampier 20th (19:18.8); Kyran Erwin 23rd (19:44.3); Colton West 47th (21:15.7). Jazmin Chavez placed 1st (19:52.9); Kaylee Delzotti fourth (21:38.6); Taylor Shea 24th (26:38.1); Jordan Baarstad 36th (28:54.6); Rayne Quinones 37th (28:58.6). In the 5K JR/SR Division: Isabella Webster 43rd (26:55.0). Isaac Hasel (19:14.4); Ethan Cleveland 30th (20:21.8); Andrew Prince 36th (20:52.4); Jacob Post 44th (22:05.9). In the 3K Novice Race: Jaycee Smith 9th (14:47.6); Daisy Thompson 24th (16:19.3). The Pirates next scheduled run is Saturday, Sept. 10, Ash Ck. XC Festival at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
