North Bend’s girls won their second state championship in three years at the 2015 OSAA 4A State Swimming Championships at the Mt. Hood CC Aquatic Center in Gresham Saturday. The Bulldogs edged runner-up Sweet Home 75 to 74.5. North Bend’s boys took fifth and Marshfield’s Spencer Fromm scored two-points to give the Pirates 17th. Catlin Gabel won the boy’s state title, while La Grande was second. Marshfield and North Bend finished as co-champions of the 4A Far West League boys basketball race for the 2014-15 season. The two Bay Area teams won their final games of the regular season Friday on the road. Marshfield had to come from behind in downing South Umpqua 61-59 at Tri City. The loss knocked the Lancers (5-5, 15-8) into a tie with Brookings-Harbor (5-5, 8-16), a 90-39 winner at home over Douglas (0-10, 5-18), for third place. The two teams will meet Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at MHS, in Coos Bay to break the tie. North Bend won at Siuslaw (2-8, 5-14), 56-31, in Florence. The Bulldogs (9-1, 21-1) are the state’s top-ranked team, and the Pirates (9-1, 19-5) are No. 4. The OSAA Power Rankings freeze Tuesday, Feb. 24, 10 p.m. That will then determine the seeding for the upcoming playoffs. The seven league champions make the “A” group and earn a bye from the play-in round. They, plus the next highest ranked team, make up the eight teams that will then host a playoff game with the winner advancing to the OSAA 4A State Championships March 12-14 at Liberty & Century high schools in Hillsboro.

Marshfield finished in third and North Bend fourth in the 4A girls Far West League basketball race for the 2014-15 season with wins last Friday night, the final night of the regular season. The Lady Pirates will wait for the OSAA Power Rankings to freeze Tuesday night, 10 p.m., to determine their playoff opponent and location for the “Play-In” round. Marshfield (5-4, 13-10) downed South Umpqua (0-9, 1-21) 64-30 in Tri City, while North Bend (5-5, 11-10) won at Florence, 52-34 over Siuslaw (2-8, 4-16). Brookings-Harbor (10-0, 18-4) finished the season unbeaten in league with a 62-37 home win over second place Douglas (7-3, 14-9).
