News release from the Coos Co. Sheriff’s Office. “On 12/31/13 at 0937 hours Coos County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 6500 block of East Bay Drive, North Bend, Oregon and took a report of a residential, daytime burglary and theft. When the crime was reported by the home owners it was suspected that the crime had just occurred within an hour or two of this initial report. It was reported that a weapon had been taken during this burglary. At 1132 hours, just two hours later, multiple 911 calls were received from the 6500 block of East Bay Drive regarding shots fired. Officers learned that the suspects had returned to the residence and attempted to re-enter the home that they had burglarized earlier. It was reported that the suspects were a male and female, wearing gloves, dark hoodie sweat shirts, blue jeans with bandanas covering their faces. The homeowner shot at the suspects multiple times with a large caliber handgun, the suspects fled in a white SUV north bound on East Bay Drive. At 1230 hours the white SUV was found abandoned approximately 5 miles up Kentuck Way Lane of East Bay Drive. No evidence of bullet strikes was found on exterior of the vehicle. The vehicle was impounded for further examination. At 1730 hours multiple calls to the Sheriff’s Office regarding a suspicious male on Kentuck Way Lane were received. Sheriff’s Deputies responded and located a male subject identified as Jacob Daniel Burch 31 YOA of North Bend, Oregon. Deputies were able to identify Mr. Burch as the male suspect in the burglary. He was arrested for Burglary I, Theft I and Attempted Burglary I; additional charges and arrests are anticipated. The trend during many of these daytime burglaries is that the perpetrators return to the same location to steal more items, making multiple trips, while the home owners are away. In some instances days have passed before the suspects return. That was also the case in this crime. The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to understand their rights and the legalities as it pertains to using a firearm for their protection.
