North Bend needed three overtimes to down Cascade 75-72 in the Bulldog’s opener Thursday at the OSAA 4A boys’ basketball tournament at Century High School in Hillsboro. The win advance top-ranked North Bend into the championship semi-finals against Scappoose, a 57-46 winner over fourth-ranked Marshfield. With the loss, the Pirates were thrust into the morning consolation bracket to face Cascade.

North Bend suffered its first loss at the OSAA 4A boys’ basketball tournament at Liberty High School in Hillsboro Friday in one of two championship semi-final games. The No. 5 Scappoose Indians handed No. 1 North Bend a 56-53 loss forcing the co-Far West League champions into a third place trophy game Saturday. Marshfield (20-7), co-league champs with North Bend (24-2), was eliminated from the tournament in a morning consolation semi-final game to Cascade of Turner, 71-47.

North Bend won the third place trophy at the OSAA 4A boys’ basketball tournament at Liberty High School in Hillsboro Saturday night. The Bulldogs beat Philomath 47-40. The two teams were the top-ranked teams entering the three-day tournament, but both fell in the championship semi-finals on Friday. North Bend’s Cam Lucero was named First Team All Tourney by a unanimous selection of the tournament’s coaches. Scappoose went on to beat North Marion, of Aurora, 51-48 to win the state title. Cascade, of Turner, took fourth with a 51-49 win over Madras. Sutherlin won its second straight girls’ title with a 51-46 win over Henley, of Klamath Falls. The two teams were the top-ranked teams entering the tournament. Cascade won third by beating Valley Catholic of Beaverton, 47-34. Gladstone took fourth with a 54-31 defeat of Banks.
South Coast All-Stars
South Coast high school basketball players were featured in the 2015 South Coast All-Star Basketball Series at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay Sunday evening. The two games were benefits for BASA/Big Mike and their local programs and featured invited players from Florence to Brookings. The two players of the year from the 4A Far West League were present but their respective team results were split. In the girl’s game, the Red Team, coached by former North Bend high school coach Tom Younker, downed Lamont Swinson’s Blue Team 59-53. FWL player-of-the-year Drew Farmer, a junior from Brookings-Harbor had11 points for the losing Blue Team. She was tied for team high honors with Grace Herman of Myrtle Point. Marshfield senior Katelyn Rossback led the winning Red Team with 14-pooints. Haley Timeus of Gold Beach followed with 11. The boy’s game was won by Swinson’s Blue Team 103-68 over Jeff Johnson’s Red Team. Swinson had FWL player-of-year Cameron Lucero of North Bend, and 1st Team FWL player Hunter Olson of Marshfield. Olson scored 20, and Lucero had nine. Brookings-Harbor’s Christian Edwards, another 1st Team FWL player, added 15 for the winners, followed by 14 each from Bandon’s Tristian Davidson and Powers’ Tye Jackson.
