North Bend opened the Capitol City Classic basketball tournament at Willamette University in Salem Monday with a 59-41 win over Gervais. The Bulldogs (1-4) played Kailua, Hawaii on Tuesday and will play again today. The Lady Bulldogs game at home Tuesday night with Sweet Home was cancelled. North Bend (4-3) is next scheduled to play at Elmira on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Marshfield’s basketball teams split their final non-conference games before the Christmas Break Tuesday night in Coos Bay against visiting North Marion of Aurora, OR. The Huskies won the opener over the Lady Pirates 46-41, while Marshfield’s boys prevailed 57-48. In back-to-back games, the Pirates have now beaten last year’s state champions, Scappoose, and the runners-up, North Marion. Justin Cooper scored 15, while Jake Miles had 12, Rylee Trendell 11, Bo James Weatherston 6, Kasey Banks 5, Scott Clough 4, Jacob Dub 2, Vincent Tine 2, Nick Minton 1. The Pirates (7-1) next play in a tournament in Ketchikan, Alaska, Monday, Dec. 28, 10:45 a.m., against Hutchinson. All of Marshfield’s games in Alaska will be broadcast live on KMHS FM 91.3. Marshfield’s girls (5-3) next play in the Sisters’ tournament, Monday, Dec. 28, 7 p.m., against Banks. The tournament runs through Wednesday.
