North Bend placed third among 4A schools at the 2014 OSAA Cheerleading State Championships Saturday at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Portland.  Klamath Union was named 4A State Champion, followed by Sweet Home, the Bulldogs, La Salle Prep and Henley.  Brookings-Harbor and Siuslaw also competed, but did not place.

Marshfield’s girls and boys basketball team swept visiting South Umpqua Friday night in a pair of 4A Far West League games in Coos Bay.  For the Lady Pirates, Marshfield (7-4, 16-7) moves into sole possession of third place with the 62-16 win, and one game to go, while Douglas (5-5, 9-10), which was tied with the Lady Pirates for third, drops a game behind with the Trojans having two games to go.  Both will end the regular season against top-ranked unbeaten Sutherlin (10-0, 21-0).  The Pirate boys clinched at least a tie for a co-championship with a 56-31 win over the Lancers.  Marshfield (10-1, 14-9) leads second place Sutherlin (8-2, 16-5) by one game and the Pirates visit Sutherlin Tuesday for Marshfield’s final regular season game, while the Bulldogs have the Pirates and then Douglas.  Junior Hunter Olson led Marshfield with 16-points, while sophomore Rylee Trendell scored 10.  In other boy’s FWL games Friday, North Bend (7-3, 14-7) beat Douglas (0-10, 1-18) 45-23, and Siuslaw (2-9, 6-15) fell 60-46 at Brookings-Harbor (6-4, 13-7).  On the girl’s side, Brookings-Harbor (8-2, 19-2) beat visiting Siuslaw (3-8, 5-16) 71-38, and North Bend (2-8, 4-15) downed Douglas at home, 40-36.

Marshfield and North Bend’s girls finished first and second during the 11-team District 4 Swimming Championships at the North Bend Municipal Pool Saturday.  The Lady Pirates won with 234-points, while the Lady Bulldogs tallied 213.  Cottage Grove won the boy’s meet with 282-points, while Phoenix was second with 229, followed by third place Marshfield with 158 and North Bend in fourth with 147.  North Bend’s Karl Stuntzner-Gibson and Marshfield’s Shaylyn Brownell each won two events to lead their teams.  Both were also named to the All Conference First Teams.  North Bend also got Alyssa Bennett and Lilana Bennett on the girl’s First Team.  Named to the Second Team were Kayla Sparkman and Elyse Trendell, both Marshfield, and North Bend’s Madysen Hannah and Cassie Dallas.  Third Team honors were achieved by North Bend’s Alissa McCord.  MHS & NB girl’s results:  200 Yard Medley Relay – 2 NB 1:55.16; 4 Marshfield 1:58.33; 200 Yard Free – 1 Alyssa Bennett, NB, 1:58.42; 3 Kayla Sparkman, M, 2:09.57; 4 Asha Huffman, M, 2:14.79; 8 Hannah Delgado, M, 2:29.01; 12 Shaelynn Brierley NB, 2:42.67; 200 Yard IM – 1.
