Regional tournaments in boys’ tennis and boys’ golf begin today. The Boys Tennis Regionals are at Black Butte, west of Sisters, and Boys Golf is at Centennial Golf Course at Medford.

North Bend’s choir team placed fourth at the OSAA State Choir Championships Friday at George Fox College in Newberg. La Grande won with 336-points, followed by Philomath (308), Klamath Union (275), North Bend (270), and Siuslaw (263).

Three meet records were set during the 107th Coos Co. Track Meet inside Pete Susick Stadium at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay Friday night. The Pirates’ senior sprinter Maddie Metzler set two of the new standards flashing to wins in both the 100 (12.53) and 200 (25.49). Marshfield junior Hunter Drops got the other record in the Pole Vault (15-7), which leads the 4A statewide list. North Bend won the boy’s portion of the longest running, continuous, competitive track meet in the state of Oregon with 184-points. Marshfield was second with 149, followed by Coquille 82, Myrtle Point 53 and Bandon 49. The Lady Pirates won the girl’s portion with 204-points. North Bend was second with 145, followed by Coquille 81, Myrtle Point 45, Bandon 34 and Powers 4. Outstanding runners were: Anthony Wynn, Myrtle Pt. (who won both the 100 (11.38) & 200 (23.43) and he also won the Long Jump 21-10), and Maddie Metzler, Marshfield, winning both sprints; Outstanding Throwers: Brandon Bowen, Coquille (who won both the Shot Put 50-00 and Discus 144-07, second best mark in the 3A ranks), and Savannah Thurman (who won both the Shot Put 34-06 and Discus 117-09) & McKenzie Allison (who won the Javelin 137-02, with the best mark among 4A throwers this season), both from Marshfield; Outstanding Jumpers: Hunter Drops, Marshfield (who won the Pole Vault, High Jump 6-02, and Javelin 163-03), and McKenzie Gauntz, North Bend (who won the Pole Vault 11-02). Myrtle Point’s Grace Herman was second in the Javelin (125-01), with the top mark among 2A throwers this season.

North Bend is closing in on a 4A Far West League baseball championship following a double-header sweep of visiting third-place Marshfield 13-7, 5-1 at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend Friday. The Bulldogs (11-1, 16-4) led the first game 5-3 going into the top of the sixth when the Pirates (6-6, 9-13) scored four runs and took the lead at 7-5. But, North Bend exploded for eight runs to clinch the first game. Pirate senior Andrew Sharp had two solo home runs. North Bend senior Jon Bennison, who got the win on the mound, stroked a two-run shot off Sharp in the sixth that sparked the eight-run inning. South Umpqua (9-3, 12-9) is in second place following a sweep of Douglas (3-9, 5-17) 9-2, 15-2 in Winston. Down at Brookings-Harbor, the Bruins (3-9, 6-15) won the opener 10-3, while Siuslaw (4-8, 6-16) got the second game 7-2. North Bend hosts Brookings-Harbor Tuesday, and ends the regular season at Siuslaw in Florence Friday with a double-header. Marshfield hosts South Umpqua Tuesday and Douglas Friday.

The final week of the regular season will be big in the 4A Far West League. Marshfield (12-0, 18-5), Douglas (11-1, 17-3) and South Umpqua (7-5, 13-7) have already clinched post season play, but the order still has to be decided. First place Marshfield swept visiting North Bend (3-9, 9-11) 12-2, 14-1 Friday at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay. Douglas is one game back after sweeping two from South Umpqua 15-2, 11-1 at Tri City. Brookings-Harbor (3-9, 10-13) swept two from Siuslaw (0-12, 2-20) 10-9, 10-0 at Florence. Marshfield will have to win the title on the road this week with a single game at South Umpqua Tuesday, and two at Douglas Friday.
