NB wins State Track Title
North Bend’s boys won the OSAA 4A State Track Championship Saturday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, while Marshfield’s girls placed third. The Bulldogs got two individual wins out of senior Wyatt Chamberlin who capped his prep career with titles in the High Jump (6-08) and 200 (22.21). Drew Matthews finished second in the Long Jump (21-05.25). Matt Woods was the runner-up in the 100 (11.07). Luke Lucero was third in the Pole Vault (14-00), while teammate Alex Backman came in sixth. James Jordan took sixth (6-00) in the High Jump. Drae Stark was sixth (41-03.50) in the Triple Jump as North Bend tallied 51-points to Hidden Valley’s 50. Marshfield’s boys placed 24th with eight points from sophomore Hunter Drops who was fourth in the PV (13-06), and sixth in the Javelin (169-09). Marshfield scored 40-points for third in the girl’s meet. North Valley won with 65-points, followed by Crook County with 46. The Lady Pirates were led by senior Shaylen Crook who won the 3000 meter (10:12.27) title Friday, and then finished third in the 1500 (4:46.83) Saturday. Marshfield’s ’ 4X100 Relay team took second (50.12) to North Valley. Adryana Chavez was second in the Triple Jump (35-05.75) and Isabel Groth was fourth in the Long Jump (16-06.75). North Bend’s girls got a one-two punch in the Pole Vault as Mikena Shay won the event (11-00), while teammate McKenzie Gauntz came in second (10-09). Sophomore Gabby Hobson was eighth in the 800 (2:25.36) as the Bulldogs scored 19-points for 13th place.

North Bend is the only Far West League team left in the 4A playoffs. The Bulldogs, league champions, will host Newport on Tuesday, May 28th, 5 p.m., at Clyde Allen Field. North Bend had a bye from the “play-in” round, while the Cubs eliminated the FWL’s No. 3 team, Siuslaw, 6-1 last Thursday at Newport. The FWL’s No. 2 team, Brookings-Harbor, lost at home on Friday, 5-0, to Cascade. The league’s No. 4 team, South Umpqua, lost at Astoria 10-2.

Marshfield advance to the “Round of 16” in the state 4A softball playoffs with a road win at La Salle Prep in Milwaukie, 2-1, Thursday. The Lady Pirates will now play at Gladstone on Wednesday May 28. Out of the four Far West League teams in the playoffs, only Brookings-Harbor was eliminated in the “play-in” round. The FWL’s No. 3 Bruins fell 8-2 at Mazama in Klamath Falls. League champion South Umpqua had a bye and will now host Banks ranked as the No. 2 team in the state. FWL runner-up Douglas beat visiting Crook Co. 8-3 on Friday in Winston, and will next play at Henley near Klamath Falls.
