Ranked No. 1 in the 4A preseason football poll, North Bend lived up to it Friday night at Vic Adams Field. The Bulldogs downed visiting North Valley 41-14. North Bend travels to Cottage Grove this Friday.

Marshfield won its prep football season opener at Cottage Grove Friday night, 26-12. It was a 7-6 Pirate lead at half-time, but Marshfield scored twice in the third and one more in the fourth to beat the team that finished second in state a year ago. Senior Andrew Sharp scored on 75-yard kickoff return to open the second half for the Pirates. Marshfield plays at Sutherlin this Friday.

In football games involving Far West League teams Friday night. South Umpqua beat Hidden Valley 47-12; Scio dumped Sutherlin 52-28; Illinois Valley over Douglas 56-30; and, Siuslaw thumped up visiting Newport 49-14.

Marshfield placed fifth in one of the prep cross country courses at Tillamook Saturday to open the 2014 season. Host Tillamook won with 112 points, followed by Sandy (120), Riverdale (126), and Horizon Christian (126). The Pirates tallied 144. Individually, Colby Gillett placed third (18:28.22); Sawyer Heckard was 7th (19:50.58), 42 Ian Emlet 20:41.9; 56 John Hampton 21:35.75; 89 Cody Harkins 23:00.44. In the Novice 3K, Marshfield freshman runners were first and second: Ethan Cleveland (13:30.55) and Isaac Hasel (13:30.94). Zach Boice placed 49th (19:21.03). North Bend’s boys competed in the 5K race: 9 Nick Hossley 18:53.69; 41 George LaGesse 20:40.33; 48 Phillip Kuckuck 21:06.44; 71 Daniel Koechel 22:15.83. In the 1A-4A 5K race: 22 Grady Hampel 24:42.9;

North Bend’s soccer teams swept Astoria’s teams in Corvallis Saturday. The Bulldog boys prevailed 5-2, whle North Bend’s girls won 7-0. Marshfield’s soccer teams fell to Klamath Union on Saturday. The Pirate boys traveled to the Klamath Basin and lost to the Pelicans 5-0, while the Marshfield girls were at home and dropped a 12-1 decision to KU.
