Michael Murphy with the Coos Co. Emergency Services Dept. issued a news release Monday, July 31. The National Weather Service in Medford has issued an Excessive Heat Warning…which is in effect from noon Tuesday to 8 PM PDT Thursday. A Heat Advisory has also been issued. This Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Tuesday to 11 PM PDT Wednesday. The Excessive Heat Watch is no longer in effect. * Temperatures: Inland high temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees, with overnight lows in the mid 60s to 70s. * Locations include: Areas just inland of the coast in Coos County. * Impacts: Very high temperatures and limited relief overnight; will increase chances for heat related illness, especially for sensitive groups and people without access to air conditioning. Heat stress is possible for livestock and outdoor pets. Also, area rivers still run cold and fast, increasing the risk for hypothermia and water rescues. * View the hazard area in detail at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/mfr/HAZARD Precautionary/preparedness actions… * An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. * These hot temperatures are likely to create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat illnesses are possible. * Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun. * Check up on relatives and neighbors, as well as outdoor pets and livestock. * Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
