News release.  Coos Health & Wellness is recognizing October as National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Community Assessment published in May 2016 by OHSU, reports that in Coos County breast cancer is the second most prevalent type of cancer after prostate. Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women under the age of 50 in our county. In Coos County, only 64% of women ages 50-74 had an annual mammogram. Fast Facts about Breast Cancer: • Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. • Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease. • Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age. • Men can also get breast cancer. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men. What are the Symptoms of Breast Cancer? Some women may have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include any change in the size or shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk, a new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs, see your doctor right away. How Can I Lower My Risk of Breast Cancer? You can lower your risk of breast cancer by taking care of your health in the following ways: • Begin yearly breast exams by your medical provider at 21 years of age. • Begin yearly mammograms at 40 years of age. • Keep a healthy weight. • Exercise regularly. • Limit exposure to radiation. • Breastfeed any children you may have, if possible. Through the Breast & Cervical Cancer program and Reproductive Health program, Coos Health & Wellness is able to offer women’s annual exams free of charge, including clinical breast exams and mammogram orders. Coos Health & Wellness is also able to bill Oregon Health Plan, Pacific Source, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Providence, MODA/ODS, and United Healthcare.
