Oregon State Police detectives are continuing to lead the Josephine County Major Crime Team investigation into the officer involved shooting in Josephine County on October 13th. Preliminary information indicates that at 7:27 a.m., the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety began receiving reports of a Silver Chevy SUV crashing into several parked vehicles at the Wal-Mart parking lot in Grants Pass. Further reports indicated the vehicle then left the area and began traveling the wrong direction on Highway 199 (Parkway) before eventually crashing into a guard rail near the intersection of Highway 199 and “F” street in Grants Pass. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and observed a male subject, who was later identified as Shawn PAPPE, age 46, of Gold Hill, sitting in the vehicle with a large knife. Grants Pass Department of Public Safety officers began negotiating with PAPPE and called for medics to stage on scene. After approximately twenty minutes of negotiation, PAPPE exited the SUV and confronted the nearby officers with the knife. The officers deployed less lethal force options including a Taser and bean bag rounds. PAPPE continued to advance towards the nearby officers resulting in officers firing shots at PAPPE. Immediately after the shooting, PAPPE received medical attention by the staged medics but was pronounced deceased at the scene. No officers were injured and the officer names are withheld at this time.
