Oregon running backs coach Gary Campbell has been named FBS assistant coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association, the organization announced Monday. Campbell, in his 32nd year with the Ducks, coached Royce Freeman to the first 1,000-yard season by a true freshman in UO history. Freeman has 1,185 yards this fall entering the Pac-12 Championship game Friday against Arizona at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Last year, Campbell coached Byron Marshall to a 1,000-yard season, and prior to that he mentored all-Americans Kenjon Barner (2012) and LaMichael James (2010-11). Freeman this fall posted the 21st 1,000-yard season by a back in UO history, and Campbell has coached 19 of them. The other nominees among FBS assistants were Scottie Montgomery of Duke and Bill Cubit of Illinois.
