Roberto Nelson scored a game-high 26 points and Oregon State battled back from an eight-point deficit to force overtime, but Arizona State exploded in the extra period to win 86-82 on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Nelson came up clutch late in the second half, getting a layup to drop with 20 seconds remaining that tied the game at 64. Arizona State was able to hold for the final shot, but Jahii Carson missed at the buzzer. In the extra period, Oregon State (13-9, 5-5 Pac-12) would jump out to a 67-64 lead, but Arizona State (17-6, 6-4) would go on a 5-0 run that gave the Sun Devils a 69-67 lead. The Beavers would knot it up again after a pair of Nelson free throws at 3:04. Nick Johnson scored 18 points, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had 14 points and 10 rebounds in place of injured starter Brandon Ashley and No. 2 Arizona grinded out a 67-65 victory over Oregon on Thursday night. Coming off its first loss of the season, Arizona (22-1, 9-1 Pac-12) labored offensively in its first game without Ashley, who is out for the season with a foot injury. Oregon plays at Arizona State on Saturday, 2 p.m. Oregon State plays at Arizona on Sunday, 4 p.m.

The wintry weather in the Willamette Valley forced a change in the collegiate basketball schedule. Oregon hosts Utah in Pac-12 women’s basketball Saturday, 2 p.m., in Eugene. On Monday, the Ducks host Colorado, 5 p.m. Oregon State hosts Colorado Saturday, 11 a.m., and Utah Monday, 6 p.m.

Both Oregon and Oregon State open the 2014 softball season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ, this weekend. The Ducks play Cal Poly and Fresno State today, Appalachian State and North Carolina State Saturday, and Boise State on Sunday. Oregon State opened with North Carolina State and San Diego State Thursday. The Beavers play Penn State and Cal State Northridge on Friday. On Saturday, the Beavers take on Colorado State and Sunday Appalachian State.
