Roberto Nelson scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a career-high tying eight rebounds, leading Oregon State to a clutch 76-75 victory over USC on Thursday night at Gill Coliseum.  Oregon State (12-8, 4-4 Pac-12) held the lead late in the overtime period, but after a steal and foul with time left on the clock, Pe’Shon Howard was sent to the line for two shots with just .09 left to play.  The electric crowd of 3,774 was on its feet, as Howard converted on his first free throw and showed an obvious relief as it went through the net.  His second shot was a different story, as the fans and atmosphere were too much to zone out and he missed the second attempt. Oregon State came up with the rebound and held on to win in the nail-biting overtime period.  The Beavers host UCLA on Sunday.

For as dramatic as the final minutes of Oregon’s 70-68 loss to UCLA on Thursday were, the big-picture reality is a harsh one.  By dropping a heartbreaker to the Bruins on Travis Wear’s layup with 5.3 seconds left, the Ducks lost for the sixth time in seven games. The lone win in that stretch, last week at Washington State, was Oregon’s only regulation victory in the month of January, as the once 13-0 Ducks fell to 14-6 overall, 2-6 in the Pac-12.  The Ducks host USC Saturday.

The No. 22 Oregon State wrestling team topped Cal Poly 22-12 Thursday afternoon in its first outdoor meet.  With rain throughout the morning in San Luis Obispo, it was unsure if the match could actually be held outdoors. The California sunshine came through in the end, though, and the meet took place in the plaza of the University Union.
