Roberto Nelson scored a game high-tying 25 points and Devon Collier added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but Oregon State could not hold on late in the second half to take down No. 3 Arizona, falling 74-69 at Gill Coliseum on Wednesday night. The Beavers played with intensity, fed by the raucous crowd and Beaver Dam. With six minutes remaining, the Beavers held a 62-61 lead, but saw it fall away as Arizona (28-2, 15-2 Pac-12) capitalized on opportunities late in the game, putting away a motivated Oregon State (15-14, 7-10 Pac-12) squad. Oregon State was crippled by 17 turnovers that led to 21 points for the Wildcats in a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes.

The Oregon women’s basketball team heads to Seattle for the Pac-12 Tournament this week looking to extend one run, and end another with a flourish. The Ducks (15-14) will play Washington State in the first round of the conference tournament Thursday in KeyArena (6 p.m. PT, Pac-12 Networks). Oregon enters the postseason on a hot streak, having swept ASU and Arizona at home last week, and will try to send head coach Paul Westhead out on a successful note. Westhead, who signed a five-year contract when he became UO coach in 2009, is nearing the end of the deal March 31. His contract will not be renewed beyond that date, it was announced Tuesday. Westhead told players of his decision Tuesday.

After a strong weekend at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins has been named both USA Softball National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. This is Hawkins’ first career national player of the week honor and her second Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award. The sophomore was a great choice for both, as she posted three shutouts and just one unearned run allowed over four appearances last weekend. She improved to 10-2 on the young season after shutting down No. 25 ranked Auburn, Bradley and Illinois State.
