Khiry Shelton of the men’s soccer team and Ruth Hamblin of the women’s basketball team took home the top honors at the 17th annual Bennys Tuesday night at Gill Coliseum. The event is an end-of-the-year celebration commemorating the achievements of student-athletes at Oregon State University. Shelton earned Male Athlete of the Year after leading the Beavers to their first NCAA Tournament since 2003. He was selected the Pac-12 Player of the Year after collecting a conference high 32 points. He also was honored by being a member of the Far West Region First Team and was the No. 2 overall draft pick in the Major League Soccer Draft by New York City FC. Hamblin paced OSU to its first ever Pac-12 Conference title and for her efforts captured the Female Athlete of the Year Benny. The junior center earned a plethora of postseason honors in the recently completed season, including Pac-12 Player of the Year, Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, third team All-American and second team Academic All-American. For the season Hamblin averaged 12.9 points and 8.6 rebounds. The men’s soccer team was presented the Male Team of the Year for the first time since 2003 while the women’s basketball team earned Female Team of the Year for the second consecutive year.
