Hansen Honors at OSU
Former Oregon State University standout student-athletes Sean Mannion and Tayla Woods have been honored as the Beavers’ recipients of 2014-15 Pac-12 Tom Hansen medals. A medal is awarded annually to an outstanding senior male and female student-athlete from each Pac-12 institution based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership. Mannion was the first three-year team captain in OSU football history and was selected to the Pac-12 academic honorable mention team his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He left OSU as the Pac-12’s all-time leading passer with 13,600 yards and holds a total of 18 OSU offensive records. The liberal studies graduate of OSU was selected in the third round of last month’s NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams. Woods, a Corvallis native, was a four-year letterwinner for the volleyball team and led the Beavers to the NCAA Tournament last season. She was OSU’s NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, signifying the top senior female student-athlete. Woods earned a place on the Pac-12 academic first team three times. She graduated from OSU with degrees in education and psychology. Conference medal winners have been named every year since the 1960-61 academic year. In 2009, the Pac-12 renamed the award in honor of Hansen, who retired at the end of June 2009 after serving 26 years as commissioner of the then Pac-10 Conference.
Ducks & Auburn in 2019
Oregon is scheduled to kick off another college football season at AT&T Stadium, and the Texas venue won’t be the only familiar element. The Ducks will meet Auburn in the AdvoCare Classic to open the 2019 season, it was announced Tuesday. The matchup will take place Aug. 31 of that fall, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. “An invitation to participate on a stage likes this speaks to the reputation Oregon football has earned, and we’re excited to be part of such a prestigious matchup,” UO athletic director Rob Mullens said. Oregon last played in AT&T Stadium’s annual marquee season-opening matchup in 2011, losing to Louisiana State 40-27 in the game then known as the Cowboys Classic. That followed the Ducks’ defeat nine months earlier to Auburn in the Bowl Championship Series title game following the 2010 regular season. AT&T Stadium also hosted last season’s inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship game, between Oregon and Ohio State.
