Ducks Down Wildcats in the Desert
Rob Moseley, UO release – TUCSON, Ariz. — Oregon will take a five-game winning streak into its bye week. A familiar face awaits after the break. The Ducks ran their winning streak to five games Saturday, with a 49-22 victory over Arizona. Oregon scored touchdowns on seven straight possessions between the first and third quarters at Arizona Stadium, improving to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play. That left Oregon as one of three unbeaten teams remaining in conference play, along with USC and UCLA. Those Bruins, led by head coach Chip Kelly, visit Autzen Stadium on Oct. 22, after both teams rest up over upcoming bye weeks. “This week is a week for us to attack Oregon,” UO coach Dan Lanning said. “We have all the respect in the world for the team we’re about to play, but the biggest team that we can affect is us. So that’s really going to be our focus this next week.” Saturday’s game set up as a showdown between Arizona’s explosive passing offense and the power of Oregon’s rushing attack. That battle ended up being one-sided, as Oregon had five different players combine to rush for seven touchdowns, led by three from quarterback Bo Nix. Oregon finished the game with 306 rushing yards, a week after rushing for 351 against Stanford. The Ducks also threw for 274 yards, giving them 580 yards of total offense, just shy of their season-high 624 in the win at Washington State. The UO defense held Arizona to 241 passing yards, well off the Wildcats’ season average of 340. “Complete game,” Lanning said. “Certainly some moments that we went back. But overall our team is getting better.” Individually, Nix finished 20-of-25 passing for 265 yards, and had eight rushes for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Whittington accounted for 92 yards on the ground, on just six carries, James rushed for 69 yards and Irving rushed for 67. A week after committing 14 penalties in the win over Stanford, many on the UO offensive line, the Ducks committed just six Saturday — none on the offensive line. “You get what you emphasize, right?” Lanning said. “And if we see a wart, we want to go fix it. That being said, there’s a lot of things that we can continue to fix.”

OSU Comeback Win at Stanford
OSU release – STANFORD, Calif. – A 56-yard touchdown reception with 13 seconds left by Tre’Shaun Harrison capped a fourth quarter comeback for Oregon State over Stanford on Saturday night, 28-27. Down 24-10 heading into the final stanza, Oregon State (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12) rattled off 18 of the game’s next 21 points to win their first conference game of the season. Ben Gulbranson – making his first start of the season – completed 20 passes for 250 yards and a pair of scores to lead the Beavers in the comeback win, including the 56-yard connection to Harrison for the game-winning score. Harrison led the Oregon State receivers with 104 yards through the air, including the score that finally separated the sides. On the ground, Deshaun Fewnick dashed for 83 yards on just three carries – including a 43-yard dash to the endzone in the fourth quarter. As a team, Oregon State amassed 442 yards of offense – including 250 from the air. Stanford opened the scoring with a touchdown in the first quarter, and Oregon State answered with a Jack Colletto one-yard scamper for the score to bring it to a tie at 7. A pair of Cardinal scores – a field goal and trip to the endzone – gave the hosts a 17-7 lead at the break. Atticus Sappington cut into the Stanford lead with a 40-yard field goal to bring the Beavers within a touchdown and a PAT. After the Cardinal went up 14 with a late-third quarter score, the Beavers’ comeback was about to get started. Gulbranson and Silas Golden connected for a 21-yard trip to the endzone, but OSU failed the two-point conversion and found themselves down just six with ten seconds gone in the final quarter. Nearly nine minutes later, Damien Martinez sprinted for 43 yards for a touchdown of his own to bring the Beavers within two. On the Cardinal’s ensuing drive, they dashed down the field for a 46-yard field goal to ice the game, but the Beavers had other plans. Without any timeouts and the clock ticking, Gulbranson led the Beavers down the field for the win. Oregon State needed 76 yards for six points, and Harrison’s 56-yard reception to the end zone was what the Beavers needed for the lead. Following a failed two point try, Stanford saw their comeback chances thwarted by a Ryan Cooper Jr. interception as time expired. (Former Marshfield player Cory Stover, OLB for OSU, was credited with a solo tackle in the game with the Cardinal. His first of the season). Oregon State will return home to play Washington State next Saturday, October 15. Kickoff from Reser Stadium is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen on Pac-12 Networks.
