On Wednesday March 1, 2017 at about 9:15 a.m., OSP Troopers, Lane County Sheriff’s Office and emergency personnel responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on Highway 126W near milepost 47 (near Cornerstone Drive in Veneta). The preliminary investigation revealed a 50 year old Veneta resident was walking with his dog westbound on the shoulder of Highway 126W near Cornerstone Drive in Veneta. A silver colored 2007 Volkswagen Passat, was traveling westbound and for unknown reasons, traveled onto the shoulder, striking the male pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen, operated by 47 year old Eugene resident Shaynor Newsome, was not injured. This is an ongoing investigation and the identity of the deceased is being withheld until the next of kin notification has been confirmed. Update: The pedestrian killed in the fatal crash was identified as 50 year old Thomas F. Ascariz II of Veneta.
