The 2016/17 prep boys basketball season for Marshfield came to an end Friday night in the Klamath Basin of Southern Oregon.  The Pirates fell to Mazama 61-48 in a 4A “Play-In” round.  Mazama advances to the OSAA first round playoffs this coming weekend.  Two other Far West League teams also lost Friday night.  Douglas was thumped at North Marion 83-42, and Siuslaw lost at home to Newport 58-41.  That only leaves league champion North Bend in the playoffs.  The Bulldogs had a bye and will host a first round OSAA playoff game Friday, March 2, 7 p.m., against Sutherlin.  Sutherlin won its “Play-In” game 52-43 over Klamath Union.

North Bend’s girls had the longest road trip among the 4A basketball teams competing in the “Play-In” round this past weekend, and yet the Lady Bulldogs came up with an upset win to sit on the verge of the OSAA State Tournament.  North Bend bettered La Grande 53-49 to advance to a first round OSAA playoff game at Banks this Saturday with the winner moving on to the state tournament at Forest Grove/Pacific University, March 9-11.  The Far West League only lost one of its four teams in the playoffs this past weekend. Fourth place Brookings-Harbor lost at Gladstone Friday 54-40 ending the Bruins season.  Second place Douglas beat visiting North Valley 71-52 and will now travel to defending three-time champion Sutherlin Saturday night. FWL champion Marshfield will host Stayton on Saturday, March 4 in Coos Bay.
