Both North Bend and Marshfield opened the 2017 prep football season with wins at home Friday night. The defending state 4A champion Bulldogs beat Astoria 21-20 at Vic Adams Field, while the Pirates better Cascade 48-19 at Pete Susick Stadium in Coos Bay. The two teams are home again this Friday. North Bend hosts Philomath (1-0, won at Junction City 19-12), while Marshfield takes on Phoenix (1-0, beat visiting Crook Co. 34-12). Other Far West League teams: South Umpqua lost at home to Mazama 46-20; Douglas lost at Valley Catholic in Beaverton 29-21; Siuslaw lost at home to Elmira 50-0; and, Brookings-Harbor lost to North Valley 38-7 in a game moved to Del Norte in Crescent City, CA because of the smoke at Brookings from the Chetco Bar Fire. This Friday: Brookings-Harbor travels to Hidden Valley at Grants Pass; Sutherlin visits Douglas; Pleasant Hill travels to Siuslaw, and South Umpqua goes to North Valley.
