Marshfield is out and North Bend moves on in the 2016 OSAA prep football playoffs. The Pirates (7-3) fell at home 27-20 to Banks in overtime Friday, while the Bulldogs (8-0) ousted Eastern Oregon’s La Grande 69-13 at Vic Adams Field. The win by Banks (7-3) sends the Braves back to the South Coast this Friday to take on the top-ranked and unbeaten Bulldogs in a 7 p.m. quarter-final game. The Far West League’s other playoff team, South Umpqua (6-3), also advanced to the quarter-finals with a 28-0 win over Baker at home Saturday afternoon. The Lancers will take on defending state champion Cascade (5-3) at home in Tri City Friday.

North Bend’s Michael Brown won a state cross country title Saturday at the OSAA State Championships in Eugene at Lane Community College. The Bulldog senior won the 4A championship with a time of 16:13 for 5,000 meters. Teammate George Lagesse placed seventh (16:44) top help lead North Bend to a fourth place trophy. Valley Catholic won the team championship with 58-points, followed by Seaside 79, and Phoenix 121. The Bulldogs tallied 147. NB: 46 Donovan Oakes 17:54; 57 Patton Reid 18:06; 80 Tyson Flitcroft 18:36; 92 Chandler Pruett 18:55; 96 Jacob Adams 19:05. Marshfield was 12th with 247 points. Senior Ian Emlet led the Pirates by placing 29th overall in 17:25. He was followed by: 47 Isaac Hasel 17:55; 56 Gabe Delgado 18:06; 88 Ethan Cleveland 18:50; 93 Jeremy Roe 19:02; 104 Colton West 19:39. The Pirates also had two girls running in the 4A state championships. Sophomore Jazmin Chavez improved upon her ninth place finish last year and came in fifth overall (19:26) to earn a medal. Freshman Kaylee Delzotti was 25 (21:06). North Bend’s girls were sixth (153) behind state champion Tillamook (71), LaGrande (76), Philomath (123), Sisters (127), and Scappoose (131). Sisters beat Crook Co. 3-1 to win the OSAA 4A State Volleyball Championship Saturday night at Forest Grove High School. The Outlaws beat Henley 3-0, and Banks 3-1 to advance to the finals, while the Cowgirls downed Banks 3-0, and Valley Catholic 3-0 to reach the title match.
