North Bend’s baseball and softball teams are scheduled to open their 2023 prep seasons Tuesday, March 14, against South Umpqua. The Bulldogs’ varsity baseball team is scheduled to be home, Clyde Allen Field, 4 p.m., while the jayvee team is set to travel to So. Umpqua for a 4 p.m. game. North Bend’s girls are scheduled to host South Umpqua at 4 p.m., Oak Street Park Field, while the jayvee team will go to So. Umpqua for a 4 p.m. The Bulldog varsity girls golf team is scheduled to play Tuesday, noon, Florence.

MHS Sports
Newport’s baseball team beat visiting Marshfield 4-3 Monday to open the 2023 prep baseball season at Frank Wade Park. The Pirates (0-1) are scheduled to play Brookings-Harbor at Medford, 1:30 p.m., Wednesday. Marshfield’s golf teams are scheduled to travel to Grants Pass Tuesday, March 14, for an 11 a.m. match at Dutcher Creek.

South Coast All-Stars
The Best of the Southwest in prep basketball for the 2022-23 season gathered at Southwestern Oregon Community College at Coos Bay Sunday for the Annual Big Mike Bay Area Sportsman Association South Coast All Star Games. Volunteer coaches and invited played met in the early afternoon for a quick practice and then the games followed inside Prosper Hall. The girls went first, the Red Team, coached by Rob Babb, won77-52 over the Blue Team, coached by Garrett Stout. Marshfield’s Kate Miles led the Red Team with 19 points, while her teammate on the Lady Pirate high school team that finished fifth at the 4A State Tournament Saturday at Forest Grove, Trinity Barker, led the Blue Team with 19. In the boy’s game, the Blue Team, coached by Tom Nichols, won 102 to 92 over the Red Team, coached by Heather Weber. North Bend’s Paolo Flores led the Blue Team with 24 points and Gold Beach’s Gianni Altman led the Red Team with 33. SWOCC Athletic Director Michael Herbert wanted to thank Steve Grief for announcing and the three volunteer officials: Tyler Mulkey, John Olson and Kerry Leep.
