MHS VB
Marshfield won the OSAA 4A Volleyball Championship Saturday over Cascade 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-16). The Lady Pirates beat Crook Co. in their opener Friday 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 21-25 25-17, 15-8), then downed Baker in the semi-final round 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-4) to advance to the championships against the defending state champion Cougars. Marshfield finishes the season 24-4 with no losses to any other 4A team in the State. It’s the first State Championship for Lady Pirates Coach Tammie Montiel in her 18th season leading Marshfield. Lady Pirate junior Bridget Gould was a unanimous selection to the All-Tournament First Team. Sophomore Tatum Montiel was also on the First Team. In 3A volleyball, Siuslaw won its opener over Creswell 3-0, but fell to Burns 3-0 and lost in the 3rd place match to Sisters 3-0. Sheldon won the 6A title, Crescent Valley 5A, Valley Catholic 3A, Salem Academy 2A, and Damacus Christian 1A.

Marshfield senior Alexander Garcia Silver won his second OSAA State Cross Country Championship Saturday at Lane CC, Eugene. Garcia Silver won 15:22.2 setting a new 5K course record for the 4A division. The Dalles won the team title, while the Pirates were sixth. Siuslaw won the boy’s 3A title, while the Vikings girls were third.

Marshfield’s football team was eliminated from the OSAA 4A playoffs with a 26-6 first round loss at Scappoose Friday night. The Indians will now face top-ranked and unbeaten Mazama at Klamath Falls Saturday, Nov. 12, noon. The Pirates end their season with a 6-4 record. Home teams won all but one of the eight first round playoff games. No. 3 Marist Catholic was upset by No. 14 Gladstone 21-20 Friday night at Eugene. Other South Coast teams in the playoffs: In the 3A, Siuslaw lost at Vale 48-0; Dayton downed visiting Coquille 45-0. In the 2A: No. 6 Gold Beach beat No. 11 Taft 12-6 at home. In the 1A 8-player classification: Myrtle Pt. over Sherman/Condon 66-8. In the 1A 6-player classification: Powers over Eddyville Charter 59-6.
