Marshfield got its first prep football win of the 2023 season, and North Bend falls for the first time at defending 4A District 4 champions Mazama, Klamath Falls, Friday night. The Pirates were at home in Pete Susick Stadium and beat visiting Klamath Union 42-20, while the Bulldogs lost to the Vikings 67-21. The other league match had Ashland winning at Hidden Valley 21-0. Henley had the bye and won at Cascade 33-21. This week, Friday, Sept. 29 – North Bend (1-1, 3-1) heads back to the Klamath Basin this time to play Klamath Union (0-2, 1-3), while Mazama (1-0, 3-1) travels to Ashland (1-1, 3-1) and Hidden Valley (1-1, 1-3) visits Henely (1-0, 4-0). Marshfield (1-1, 1-3) has the league bye and will play at Junction City (2-0, 4-0). In 3A – Siuslaw (2-0, 3-1) won at Harrisburg 22-21, visiting Sutherlin won at Brookings-Harbor (0-4, 0-4) 42-0, Coquille (2-2, 2-2) lost at home to Cascade Christian 56-14. In 2A – Bandon/Pacific (2-0, 4-0) won at Glide 34-14 and Reedsport (1-1, 2-2) beat visiting Rogue River 32-0. In 1A6 – Powers won at Days Ck. 45-6. On Saturday, 1A8, Myrtle Pt. (1-0, 4-0) all over visiting Chiloquin 74-6.

Successful prep volleyball weekend for both Marshfield and North Bend. The top-ranked 4A Lady Pirates stayed home Saturday and won its inaugural “Battle at the Bay” over visiting North Eugene, Thurston and Cascade. All by 3-0 scores. Marshfield (2-0, 15-2) returns to District 4 League play Tuesday at third-ranked Marist Catholic (2-0, 11-1). Second-ranked North Bend traveled to Aurora Saturday and did well at the North Marion Invite by beating La Grande (2-0), Tillamook (2-0) and Astoria (2-1). The Bulldogs (2-1, 11-2) will have Tuesday off and return to league play at Marshfield on Thursday, Sept. 28th. Also Saturday, 3A – Visiting Lakeview beat Brookings-Harbor 3-0, and 2A – Powers lost at Oakland 3-0.

Marshfield sophomore Jaxson Stovall was sixth overall (16:48.5) in his division at the Northwest Classic Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Lane CC, Eugene. Marist Catholic junior Conor Thompson won the Varsity 5K 4A/3A/2A/1A race in 16:37.0. Crook Co. took the team title with 60-points to Knappa’s 92. Marshfield was ninth with 248 out of the 17 teams running on the site of the District 4 and state championships. North Bend was 15th with 347-points. Senior Tiago Schrader led the Bulldogs in 29th (18:42.0) out of the 131 runners. Adele Beckstead led Philomath’s girls to the 4A/3A/2A/1A team title by winning the girl’s 5K in 19:23.6. The Warriors scored 39-points to Cottage Grove’s 91. North Bend, led by freshman Bryleigh Mead was sixth overall with 140-points and Marshfield, led by freshman Lily Thompson (22:44.1) 11th out of the 13-teams with 246-points. Marshfield will next run at the Fugate Farms, Bandon, Friday, Sept. 29th. North Bend is scheduled to run at the Woahink lake XC Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 30, south of Florence.

Siuslaw and Bandon’s girls were second and fourth overall at the Cheadle Lake Park Cross Country Run Saturday near Lebanon. Valley Catholic won the 5K team race with 44-points, while Siuslaw scored 91 and Bandon 130. Myrtle Point was 16th (378) out of the 17-teams. Sophomore Marley Petrey led the Tigers in 8th place (20:43.19). East Linn Christian’s Daisy Lalonde won in 18:09.60. Junior Maya Wells led Siuslaw, 16th (21:42.97), and Dylyn Wurch was the Bobcats top runner in 80th (26:02.43). Valley Catholic and Siuslaw also went one-two on the boy’s side. Bandon 14th (353) out of the 27-teams. Junior Louigi Etta, Yamhill-Carlton, won the race in 16:41.54, senior Brayden Linton was third (17:06.67) for Siuslaw, and freshman Noah Brown led Bandon in 22nd (18:27.19).
