Marshfield dropped its 2023 prep football 4A season opener at Tillamook 45-20 Friday night at Doc Adams Field. The Pirates (0-1) are scheduled to host Cascade (1-0) at Pete Susick Stadium, Friday, Sept. 8th. 3A – Coquille opened at home Friday and downed visiting Brookings-Harbor 35-14. Siuslaw was on the road to Newport and beat the Cubs 36-0. 2A – Gold Beach fell at Heppner 42-14. Reedsport beat visiting Riverside/Ione 34-0. Bandon/Pacific picked up a road win 28-6 at Colton. 1A – Myrtle Pt. beat Adrian 54-46 at Dufur. 1A6 – Powers downed visiting Glendale 40-0.

On a trip to the Klamath Basin, five-thousand feet above sea level, the Bay Area’s two prep girls’ soccer team tested the thinner-air. Marshfield lost at Klamath Union Friday 4-0, but North Bend beat the Pelicans 2-0 on Saturday. Henley (2-0) and Marshfield (1-1) will play Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Hidden Valley, south of Grants Pass, 3 p.m. match. North Bend (2-0) will host Crook Co. (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 9, 1 p.m. Marshfield’s boys lost at Klamath Union Friday 1-0. The Pirates (0-1) are scheduled to play Henley (2-0) at Hidden Valley, Wednesday, Sept. 6th. North Bend’s boys fell at KU Saturday 5-1. The Bulldogs (0-1) are scheduled to host Elmira (0-0-1) Tuesday, Sept. 5th, 4 p.m.

Marshfield’s girls were 19th (444-pts) out of 21 teams at the Tillamook “Ultimook Race” Saturday at Hydrangea Ranch. Philomath took first (56 pts). Sophomore Riley Mullanix led the Lady Pirates on the 5K course placing 83rd (25:39.26). Freshman Lily Thompson was 90th (25:48.22), sophomore Reanna Mathias 114th (26:45.90), freshman Natalie Yost 143rd (29:13.99), and senior Jenna Erickson 153rd (30:08.96). Marshfield’s boys were 25th (615) out of 35 teams. Sophomore Jaxson Stovall led the Pirates in 25th (18:45.39). Senior Talon Thomas was 98th (21:00.12), freshman Donald Brice 104th (21:09.64), sophomore Ayden McNamee 241st (27:56.45), and sophomore Martin Cook 247th (30”08.68). Marshfield is scheduled to run Thursday, Sept. 7th, at the Brookings Invite, Salmon River.
